Chocolate was not eaten as candy or cake, but was used in sauces or drunk in bitter beverages. Chocolate drinks were made with water, not milk -- there were no cows in the Americas at the time. Though usually served unsweetened, chocolate was often flavored with chile peppers, corn meal or flowers.
