Kenya Mall Massacre
New York Times photographer Tyler Hicks was running errands in Nairobi, Kenya, when he got a tip about trouble at a nearby mall. He saw crowds fleeing the mall, "many of them shot, blood streaming from faces."
Islamic militants armed with AK-47 assault rifles stalking the mall, shooting men, woman and children. Inside, Hicks spotted a woman with two young children lying on the floor. "They were petrified, completely still. All around them were bodies -- a man next ot an ATM machine, a woman still holding a shopping bag. I took the picture and was thrown out." At most 67 people were killed in the four-day siege of terror.
After Hicks won the Pulitzer Prize, the woman emailed him. She revealed how she kept her 2-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter still during the attack. "She was humming and singing that mall music to calm the children. They lay there for five hours just hiding." |
