Gory comic books such as this 1950 issue of "The Crypt of Terror" horrified many parents and educators and fueled support for the Comics Code Authority, a self-censorship board established by comic-book publishers. The panel was created to avoid government monitoring after psychiatrist Frederic Wertham wrote a book asserting that comic books contributed to juvenile delinquency.
