Gargoyle or grotesque?

There are 112 gargoyles protecting the Cathedral, and thousands of decorative grotesque carvings. In addition to being fun or frightening, these carvings also help protect the stone walls from rain damage. Which is why?
* Grotesque -- small decorative carvings with oversized features that deflect water down and away from walls.
* Gargoyle -- part of the rain gutter system, water passes through a built-in pipe or a trough within the carving.
