Existing comment: Sergeant Mitchell Paige was holding a line against Japanese fire in the Solomon Islands in October 1942 when a sudden enemy surge broke through directly in front of his position. Paige kept up blistering fire, directing his men until everyone was either killed or wounded. Left alone, Paige continued to fight until his machine gun was destroyed, then began moving from gun to gun, holding the enemy back until reinforcements arrived. Forming the new men into a line, he then led a bayonet charge that broke the enemy advance and saved the American line.
