Existing comment: Sergeant Louis Cukela was fighting on the Western Front in 1918 when he and his men encountered heavy enemy fire. Ignoring his own safety, Cukela flanked and attacked an enemy machine gun from behind, using his bayonet to kill or drive off the entire emplacement. Using captured enemy hand grenades, he then rushed and destroyed the rest of the enemy's stronghold, capturing four men and two damaged guns. Cukela received the Medal of Honor from the Marine Corp and, as the Corps was then serving as part of the Army 2nd Division, he received a second Medal of Honor from the Army for the same action. Cukela was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1919.
