Marines have been leading the way as America's expeditionary force in readiness since established by an act of the Continental Congress on 10 November 1775. Marines made the first combat landing in American history at the Battle of Nassau, Bahamas, four months before the Declaration of Independence. Marines subsequently gained acclaim in the young nation's first expeditionary operation in the old world, participating in the defeat of the Barbara Pirates. |
