Existing comment: Suffrage for All:

"In Our Government.... A Large Majority Have No Voice"
This printed memorial, or petition, pleads for Congress to recognize that "all discriminations on account of sex or race may be removed." Founded in 1866 by Frederick Douglass, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Susan B. Anthony, the American Equal Rights Association demanded universal suffrage. However, as tensions grew between African Americans and women's rights activists, the group disbanded just a few years later. See highlighted text.

Appeal to the Women of the United States:
In 1876, on behalf of the National Woman Suffrage Suffrage Association, women's rights activists Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton signed this appeal to dedicate the nation's second century to "securing justice to Woman." It asked women to gather signatures and send them in to make "... the largest petition ever yet."
