Once suffrage for women was attained, female Americans were equal citizens under the law. Or were they?
Major legislation did pass during the 1960s and 1970s that brought further guarantees of women's rights -- more than had ever been secured in such a short period of time. In the 1980s came the culmination of the struggle to pass a controversial amendment first introduced in the 1920s: the Equal Rights Amendment. However, women continue to fight for equal legal status, parity in pay, increased employment opportunities, and political representation.
