More than 130,000 people -- including three First Ladies, several congresswoman, and Coretta Scott King -- attended the National Women's Conference in Houston, Texas, in 1977. Topics included childcare, abortion, gay and lesbian rights, and the ERA. The outcome was a National Plan of Action for women's rights that is still being debated today. A counter-conferences, led by Phyllis Schlafly, a lawyer and activist, was held across town and drew approximately 30,000 people.
