Ann Alricks, resident of Washington DC, and mother of two infant daughters, was abandoned by her husband. As a married woman, however, he legal status remained tied to her husband's. She could not sign contracts, own property, or claim wages she earned. In 1804 she petitioned Congress to grant her a divorce and her independence.
