Existing comment: Attacked in Selma:
On March 7, 1965, John Lewis of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and Hosea Williams of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference led a voting rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. State troopers attacked the marchers with bullwhips, clubs, and tear gas. Lewis was among 58 people injured. Mrs. E. Jackson of Brooklyn, New York, wrote this letter to her congressional representative asking him to "help these poor innocent people."
