1870: Fifteenth Amendment:
On February 26, 1869, Congress passed this resolution promising that the right of male US citizens to vote shall not be denied or abridged "on account of race, color, of previous condition of servitude." By February 3, 1870, three-quarters of the states ratified the 15th Amendment. While a great victory for black men, women were excluded. Furthermore, full delivery of the promise was postponed as some states took steps to limit or deny black men their constitutional right to vote. |
