TBF Avenger:
The Avenger was the Navy's principal carrier aircraft for much of the war. Lt Jg George Brown flew this TBF Avenger from the Belleau Wood, making one of two torpedo hits on the Japanese carrier Hiyo. The plane was damaged during the attack, so Brown ordered his radioman and gunner to bail out. He perished, but his crew was rescued. |
