Cmdr David McCampbell, commander of the Essex air group, flew this F6F Hellcat during the Battle of the Philippine Sea. He shot down nine Japanese and went onto become the Navy's top ace. Designed in 1941-42, the Hellcat reached a maximum speed of 375 miles per hour and had six .50-caliber machine guns. |
