Escort vessels were desperately needed to counter Nazi submarines. A quick expedient was the adaptation of a World War I wooden hulled submarine chaser. Entering the fleet in the spring and summer of 1942, these vessels had little effect on the initial attacks by German submarines, but available in quantity later in the war, they helped protect harbors and coastal areas.
