Fragment of a "Zero":
Mitsubishi A6M fighters, popularly know[n] as "Zeros", were used to protect carriers and attack bombers. Many were lost as a result of the battle [of Coral Sea] and the sinking of the carriers. This fragment is from one of those fighters.
Binoculars:
The carrier Lexington was so damaged during the battle [of Coral Sea] that she could not be salvaged and had to be scuttled. Francis Brennan, a sailor on board the escorting destroyer Morris, recovered a sea bag belonging to Lexington's chief quartermaster. Inside the sea bag was this pair of binoculars, which were presented to Brennan.
Pocket Watch:
Capt Lionel Arthur was forced to abandon Yorktown. He spent two hours in the water, ruining his pocket watch. |
