King's naval career started with the Spanish-American War and lasted through World War II. He served in surface ships, submarine operations and, in 1927, completed flight training. He commanded the aircraft carrier USS Lexington in 1930. In 1932, he attended the Naval War College and was promoted to rear admiral in 1933 and to vice admiral in 1938. On 30 December 1941, he became Commander if Chief, US Fleet. On 18 March 1942, he was also appointed Chief of Naval Operations, and held both billets throughout World War II. On 17 December 1944, he was promoted to fleet admiral.
