This model, a gift of Mrs. Leslie F Smith, was left in its dilapidated state to illustrate how all but the smallest bone ship models were made. The core of the hull was wood, often soft pine. To this were affixed thin strips of bone and, for the wales, dark strips of baleen. The two tiers of cannon can be retracted by pulling on a pair of draw strings that project through the stern chaser ports. |
