Existing comment: The Wreck of the Sussex:
Launched at Chatham Dockyard in April 1693, Sussex sailed from Portsmouth that December as flagship of a fleet of 48 warships escorting 166 merchantmen bound for the Mediterranean. In her hold were a million pounds sterling in gold and silver coins intended to purchase the allegiance of the Duke of Savoy in a war against France. After a brief layover in Cadiz, the fleet entered the Mediterranean. On February 27, 1694, a storm struck the fleet; on the third day Sussex foundered, taking with her all but two of the ship's crew, including Adm Sir Francis Wheeler.
Recently, wreckage has been found off Gibraltar that is believed to be the remains of the ship.
The painting by Tom Freeman depicts Sussex struggling to stay afloat.
