Using materials at hand -- principally bone, wood, and straw -- the ingenious French captives made all sorts of items other than ship models. These included boxes of every description, sewing aids, kitchen utensils, games, watch stands, and mechanical toys like spinning jennies and even miniature working guillotines! Here are two fine examples: a charming carved bone and watercolor dominos kit and an exquisite cigar or spectacles case fashioned from bits of straw. |
