Existing comment: Often confused with French prisoner-of-war bone models from the Napoleonic Era (1793-1815), this is actually a model made entirely of ivory, to include the sails and even the rigging. Moreover, ti was not made by captive sailors or soldiers, but rather by skilled artisans working in the city of Dieppe, France, in the 1830s and 40s. Dieppe was renowned for the ivory work produced by its artisans in the 18th and 19th centuries.
