Lou Gehrig, a first baseman for the New York Yankees, played from 1923 until 1939. Referred to as the "Iron Horse," Gehrig was renowned for his endurance. However, his career was cut short due to complications from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). The disease ended Gehrig's record-setting playing streak of 2,130 consecutive games and claimed his life at age thirty-seven. Levinthal photographed the figurine in profile without any distinguishing characteristic other than the number "4." It was the first uniform number that a baseball team retired to honor a former player.
