From the late 1800s through the mid-1900s, trains carrying people, cargo, and mail covered most of the United States. Railway mail clerks worked long, hard hours in train cars, sorting and processing the bulk of the nation's mail. Owney traveled with his clerk friends on many of the trains, receiving tags form [sic] clerks, businesses, and individuals along the way.
