When Eared Grebes arrive at Mono Lake during their fall migration, they weigh approximately 10 ounces (390 grams). While here, they eat about 15% of their bodyweight each day, feasting on tasty alkali flies and brine shrimp. This means they consume several hundred brine shrimp a day! Now that's a lot of shrimp... and some very busy grebes.
If you were migrating through the area and needed to eat 15% of your bodyweight a day, how many one pound loaves of bread would you have to eat?
The stack of bread you see here would be about 15% of a 150 pound (68 kg) person. If you weigh 60 pounds (27 kg), could you eat 8 or 9 loaves of bread a day? |
