Why so different? When tufa forms within the sandy lake bottom, sand grains become cemented together in tube-like shapes. As the formations are exposed by declining lake levels, the surrounding sand is blown or washed away, leaving these intricate and fragile shapes. When visiting the sand tufa, please don't touch, but do feel the sandpaper here to get an idea of sand tufa's texture.
