A Fading Oasis:
In 1941, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) extended its aqueduct system into the Mono Basin and began diverting water from four of the six mountain streams that nourish Moro Lake. By 1982, as a result of diversions, the lake had dropped 45 feet, lost half its volume, and doubled in salinity. These changes threatened the health of the ecosystem, and impacted local wildlife, fish, migratory birds, and human health. In the late 1970s, a group of concerned citizens and researchers formed the Mono Lake Committee to inform the public of these losses and work toward the protection of Mono Lake. |
