Maryland:
General Lew Wallace helped plan ceremonies in Baltimore. Lincoln's body arrived at 10:00am on April 21 and lay in state at the Merchants' Exchange Building. In one hour, 10,000 people viewed the late President.
In 1861, Lincoln passed through Baltimore in secret due to concerns for his safety. By 1865, according to J.C. Power: "Baltimore was then under the control of loyal men, who felt deeply grieved that a plot had been laid there for his destruction when on the way to assume the duties of his office: and they suffered still greater mortification that it was a native of their own city who had plunged the nation into mourning by the horrid crime of assassinating the President. The city added ten thousand dollars to the reward offered for the arrest of the assassin."
At 3:00pm, the train departed for Pennsylvania. All along the route, mourners stood by the railroad tracks.
