Existing comment: "The sad and unexpected intelligence of the assassination of Mr. Lincoln cast a deep gloom over the city... As soon as the melancholy announcement was officially confirmed... business suspended in respect to the memory of the illustrious dead. Public places of business, the churches and nearly every private residence, were draped in mourning. Flags hung with crape flowers hung from every window, and blended in mournful contrast with the lively accents of exhilaration that characterized the day previous."
-- The Frederick Examiner, April 19, 1865
