Existing comment: MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL® "It's our game," poet Walt Whitman once wrote. "It has the snap, go, fling of the American atmosphere." Since 1834 when the first book of instructions for baseball appeared, kids have pitched, fielded and batted on sandlots, parks and empty lots, always dreaming of being good enough to go "to the Major Leagues." In 1876 the National League played its first game. The first American League game was played in 1901, and in 1903, the two leagues battled it out in the first World Series®. From the beginning, Major League Baseball® has represented the "best" of the sport, which occupies a unique place in our national heritage while continuing to grow in popularity worldwide.

Major League Baseball® celebrates the 75th anniversary of the All-Star Game®, to be played in Houston on July 13, 2004, with "National Pastime Mickey."
