Existing comment: Codex Mexico: The Book as Art is composed of an important collection of handmade books from California, Mexico, and Australia, focusing on the work of artists who have played pivotal roles in the production of artisanal books.
The books from California were presented in The Art of the Book in California: Five Contemporary Presses, curated by Peter Rutledge Koch and Robert Trujillo and exhibited in the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University in 2011. Momentum generated by that show led to a series of exhibitions in Mexico, in which the California presses' books were displayed with an equal number of books by Mexican artists and printers. Codex Mexico was presented in Tequila, Jalisco, under the banner of the Guadalajara International Book Fair; at the Indianilla Station Cultural Center, Mexico City; and at La Capilla del Arte, Universidad de las Americas, Puebla.
