Existing comment: Magic lantern clock
2nd half of the 17th century

Matthias Gaill

A small light placed inside this clock projected images painted on exchangeable glass slides onto a wall. The slides include portraits of Emperor Leopold I and his second wife, Claudia Felicitas, longtime friends of the clock's owner, Prince Paul I Esterházy; the clock thus offered a way for the prince to demonstrate his connection to the emperor. At night, the dial itself could be projected, making it possible to see the time from bed. "Zapplers" (from the German zappeln, "to fidget") have a pendulum that swings wildly in front of the dial.
