Existing comment: Portrait of Augustus II, Elector of Saxony, King of Poland, and Grand Duke of Lithuania
after ca. 1712–20

Attributed to Georg Friedrich Dinglinger

This painted enamel on copper is one of the earliest attempts to produce a large oval portrait inspired by miniatures in a durable material. Georg Friedrich Dinglinger dedicated years of alchemical experimentation to perfecting what he called his "Amolier art" for monumental enamel. The portrait is painted en camaïeu (in two or three tints of a single color) in a robust pink that suggests the addition of gold, as in the glass goblet nearby.
