Existing comment: Armillary Sphere
17th century

probably Italian

Both calculating instrument and teaching aid, the armillary sphere was key to early modern astronomy in Europe. Scholars used it to determine and display the celestial coordinates of the planets. Composed of eight graduated rings encircling a central earth, this example demonstrates how the geocentric system maintained its status into the seventeenth century as a valid scientific model.
