Existing comment: Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat:
The Grumman Wildcat served as the primary fighter of the Marine Corps during the early stages of the Pacific War.
Designed in 1936, the Wildcat had a hand cranked landing gear, vacuum-powered flaps, and a simple electrical system. The Grumman Wildcat made its primary contributions between 1941 and 1943, before being replaced by higher performance fighters such as the F4U Corsair and the F6F Hellcat. By 1943, more than 146 Wildcats of six variants, including the General Motors FM-1, were being flown by 26 Marine squadrons.
