By June 1920, when the Republican and Democratic parties gathered for their presidential nominating conventions, thirty-five states had ratified the Nineteenth Amendment, eight rejected it, and five had yet to vote. When the Republicans failed to add a suffrage plank to their platform, attorney Sue Shelton White (center, holding Tennessee banner) and other NWP activists picketed the Republican convention in Chicago. Their sign accused Republicans of defeating ratification in Delaware and blocking ratification in Vermont and Connecticut. |
