Existing comment: Alice Paul Threatened with Incarceration in St. Elizabeth's Insane Asylum

Although the NWP had numerous able lieutenants, the arrest and lengthy sentencing of leader Alice Paul was of considerable concern, especially since her location and condition were unknown. Anxious telegrams were sent, like this one to progressive reformer and settlement house pioneer Jane Addams, calling on influential people to pressure President Wilson. Paul's attorney Dudley Field Malone, former Wilson administration official, heroically located her, threatened a writ of habeas corpus, and secured her transfer from the jail's psychiatric ward.
