On November 16, 1917, Philadelphia school teacher Elizabeth McShane was sentenced for her part in the November 10 pickets. She immediately began a hunger strike and eventually was subjected to forced feedings by Dr. John M. Ladd, the District Jail's assistant superintendent. In her affidavit, she described suffering from intense pain and vomiting, but the feedings continued, despite another physician's, Dr. James A. Gannon's, diagnosis of stomach ulcers. Before her release on November 27, McShane developed a gall bladder infection. |
