Many early motion picture films depicted suffragists as pathetic spinsters or aggressive shrews who neglected their homes, browbeat their husbands, and ignored their children. In response, suffragists began making their own films portraying themselves as crusaders devoted to their families and to fighting political corruption. The 1914 melodrama Your Girl and Mine, produced by suffrage lobbyist and future congresswoman Ruth Hanna McCormick, revolves around Rosalie Fairlie, a young bride who suffers under laws unfavorable to women. |
