Lydia Maria Child, popular novelist and author of household advice books, risked her financial well-being when she became immersed in the abolitionist movement, publishing the controversial but influential An Appeal in Favor of That Class of Americans Called Africans in 1833. Two years later, Child wrote this pioneering comparative history of women, full of examples of oppression and achievement, which served as a foundational text for women challenging the limitations placed on them.
