Popularly known as the "Mother of the Civil Rights Movement," Rosa Parks became an international symbol of strength for oppressed people. She was given many awards and honors, including ten honorary degrees. In 1963, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference inaugurated the Rosa Parks Freedom Award. In the 1970s and 1980s she received the NAACP's Spingarn Medal, the UAW's Social Justice Award, and the Martin Luther King Jr. Nonviolent Peace Prize. In 1991, the Smithsonian unveiled a bust of her. In 1994, the Rosa Park Peace Prize was established in Stockholm, Sweden.
