Existing comment: In 1855, Whistler studied art in Europe and established his home there. Soon after, he created the "French Set," the first in a number of his etching series -- most with place-based titled. He worked with Auguste Delatre and his brother-in-law Francis Seymour Haden to print the series that included portraits and landscapes Whistler had made in Paris, London, and Alsace. The title page artist-at-work Ernest Delannoy -- Whistler's travel companion in Alsace and the Rhineland while he worked on the "French Set."
