Existing comment: Ira's earliest surviving paintings and drawings date from his teenage years; he was listed as an art editor for his school's newspaper. In this self-portrait he depicts himself in striking contrast to the image of sophistication and glamour that George usually projected.

While George was working out melodies at the piano, Ira often fashioned his lyrics at a table nearby. He usually wrote out lyrics in longhand and then typed them, incorporating many changes in the course of his trial-and-error method of finding just the right words for a particular tune.
