Existing comment: Commercializing Nature:
Luther Burbank (1849-1926) was a pioneer in botany and horticulture. By the end of his career in agricultural science he had developed hundreds of varieties of fruits, vegetables, and flowers, most famously the Santa Rosa plum and the Shasta dairy. Burbank was a perfect profile for Sunset magazine, a publication of the Southern Pacific Company, which promoted home gardening and landscape design to the American middle class, developments in the agricultural industry, and nature tourism to California and the West.
