Existing comment: Venturing West:
The discovery of gold and the expansion of the territory of the United States following the Mexican War brought new waves of observers and workers west. In 1849, Benajah Antrim (b 1821) came to California on a three-stage journey from Philadelphia -- by sea, overland across Mexico, and up the coast by ship. He sketched what he saw along the way. In 1859, Danie Jenks (1828-1869) of Pawtucket, R.I., came west by river and land. He illustrated his diary and letter accounts of his western adventures in California, Oregon, and Idaho.
