Already a well-known songwriter when the war began, Irving Berlin, himself an immigrant whose family came from Siberia, was drafted into the U.S. Army in early 1918 and was assigned to Camp Upton, located in Yaphank, Long Island, New York. There Berlin wrote a Ziegfeld-style revue featuring a cast of soldiers called Yip, Yip, Yaphank, which helped raise money to construct a camp community center. "Oh How I Hate to Get Up in the Morning," one of the show's hit tunes, expressed Berlin's distress over early morning reveille. |
