Recognition from Poland
The government of Poland conferred their country's highest decoration, the Order of the White Eagle, upon President Woodrow Wilson in recognition of his role in the re-establishment of a free Polish state. Under the U.S. Constitution, Wilson could not accept decorations from a foreign government while he was president. In 1922, after his term of office was over, however, he consented to receive the honor at a quiet ceremony in his Washington home. |
