Edward Kallstrom
Originally from Iowa, Edward Kallstrom was drafted into the Army in May 1918, and arrived in Europe just as the war was ending. He was shuffled around from unit to unit, ultimately serving as a clerk in the Central Records Office Headquarters in Bourges, France. He writes to his sister on Knights of Columbus stationery after arriving in France: "The trip across the sea was a fine one, made it in short time and without dangerous incident. The sea was quite calm so that sea-sickness was not so common." Millions of American soldiers made similar journeys, and like Kallstrom, most had never been out of the country. |
