Existing comment: Armistice

President Woodrow Wilson announced that, with the European armistice signed, "Everything for which America has fought has been accomplished." He believed that the armistice brought an important opportunity for Americans "to assist by example by sober friendly counsel and by material aid in the establishment of just democracy throughout the world." However, the armistice only ended the fighting between the Allies and Central Powers. Violent conflict continued in Eastern Europe, where a civil war in Russia had broken out, and in the Middle East, where the final borders of Turkey would be fought over for three more years.
