Existing comment: News of the Offensive

Rotogravure coverage of the action at St. Mihiel, the first major offensive organized and led by the recently formed U.S. First Army led by General John J. Pershing, focuses on victorious American and French forces. The images of smiling American soldiers and Allied tanks, along with separate newspaper reports of lower than expected Allied casualties and high German prisoner counts, served to bolster support for the war. Pictured here is American opera singer Cobina Johnson (later Cobina Wright), celebrated for entertaining the troops, even under fire.
